Suicide or self-killing is enormously increasing these days. The suicide ratio in western and non-Islamic countries is preferably more significant than the Islamic states. Nowadays, Muslim countries are also increasing in suicide ratios approximately equalizing to non-Islamic countries. Suicide is strongly prohibited in Islam, but still, there can be seen many examples.
Allah says in the Quran:
And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed] except by [legal] right. This has He instructed you that you may use reason. [Qur’an 6: 151]
Some people think that killing themselves is the only solution to their mental suffering, but actually, it’s not. Killing yourself does not kill your sufferings; in fact, it heightens them. He who commits suicide keeps on enduring the pain of killing himself again and again. And he is destined to burn in the hellfire.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said,
He who commits suicide by throttling shall keep on throttling himself in the Hell-Fire [forever], and he who commits suicide by stabbing himself shall keep on stabbing himself in the Hell-Fire. [Sahih Al-Muslim Vol. 2, Book 23, Hadith 446]
Just like a doctor is consulted for sickness, in the same way, depression also needs to be talked about. The biggest reason behind commiting suicide is that we are getting away from Allah’s remembrance. We are so busy doing various daily stuff that we have no time to make a connection with Allah. We have low faith and trust in Allah that if He can put trials in your way, similarly, He can remove them. Allah tests our patience and faith by giving us challenging situations.
Allah says in the Quran:
Seek Allah’s help with patient perseverance and prayer. It is indeed hard, except for those who are humble. [Al-Baqarah 2:45]
Some years ago, it was rare to hear about any suicide news, but now we can see such examples in our very close surroundings. I have also heard several such instances in my surroundings, and thinking about those people always fill me with terror and despair, and I cannot understand what happens to people that they decide to and their life? Why do they not find any speck of light and hope to live? What is the reason behind this? They only reason I found is a distance from Allah Almighty. There are some points in our life when we have to go through specific trials and tribulations. We lose every hope, and everything seems to be dark and dull. But Prophet (SAWW) said:
Whenever a Muslim is afflicted with a hardship, sickness, sadness, worry, harm, or depression even a thorn’s prick, Allah expiates his sins because of it [Bukhari]
I also had one event in my life when I was lost in despair. I gave up every hope this was because of my University entrance test result. I was so profoundly depressed that at a point, I thought of ending my life. I have never shared this thing with any of my friends or family ever that now I am writing a blog about. I was alone at home, and I was on the verge of losing myself. But then something stopped me, and it was my faith in Allah. Suddenly I remember that this life is just that test a big test in my entrance test has no importance in front of my life test. Allah has given me the gift of life. Who am I to deprive myself of it without Allah’s will. Allah says in the Quran:
Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him, we will return. [Al-Baqarah 2:156]
Then I did Astaghfar and thought how ignorant I was to be doing such a thing to myself. To my surprise, when the time of admission came, and I applied to many universities in Lahore. To my surprise, I got my name on the first merit list of those universities. I laughed aloud at this, thanked Allah for saving me from committing a major sin. Actually, the overall merit was down that year because the test was tough.
The purpose of sharing the story was to tell you all that we do not know Allah’s plans. He rewarded me with the best when I thought that I had lost everything. He took me out of deep depression and showed me the light of faith and trust. So I also say to everyone who is reading this blog that your life is the most precious, do not even think of ending it for the useless and absurd reasons.
Love affairs and job issues are the main reasons behind the suicide of young people. I had seen two such examples in my life when a person killed himself when he could not get married to his loved ones. If you cannot get something or someone, It does not mean that no your life has no purpose, and you have lost everything. You need to move on with the failure. You have to be brave in every test and tribulation that Allah puts in your way because difficulties make you strong. Sometimes Allah removes those people from your life who are toxic and not good enough for you because he always plans to make you close to someone who is best for you.
Allah says in the Quran:
It may happen that you hate something which is good for you, and it may happen that you love a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows, and you not. [Al-Baqarah 2:216]
When you feel the presence of Allah in your heart, you will never have depression and anxiety. The main reason is our busy lifestyle. We are involved in so many things that we have no time to remember Him. We need to make a strong connection with Allah, then everything in our life will fall in its place, and we will never have no worries. I do not say that you leave everything aside and start praying for the whole day. No. try remembering Allah during your daily tasks. Even if you are cooking, washing, studying, or whatever, keep in mind that Allah is with you and watching your every action. When you wet your pillow with your tears every night, Allah watches you. When you feel depressed and think that there is no way to go, Allah is with you. He is with you everywhere you go. He knows what you are going through. He tests with sending troubles towards you to see if you are patient or not. Allah loves broken hearts more. Just try calling him once with a broken heart, and he will come to you at your one call. No one else except Him can mend your broken heart and soothe your anxious soul.
